Being a Black Milk fan can be hard at times because, you want everyone to be able to explore their musical boundaries and interests, but let’s not get it twisted; Black Milk is no Flying Lotus. Waaay back in day [2005] we were drawn to Black Milk’s seemingly effortless production style chalk full of drums, guitar licks perfectly looped samples. This instrumental album kind of embodies his work since then – he’s said in his verses and interviews how he likes to changes things up – but if you’re good at something, why stunt it?

Black Milk collaborates with illustrator Upendo “Pen” Taylor (Nike, Leroy Jenkins, Gatorade) for the music-meets-visual instrumental/art series Fuzz, Freqs & Colors (FFC). Synth or Soul is the first volume in the FFC series. The process for each volume starts with Black and Pen trading beats and sketches and refining their works along the way. Throughout that exchange, the music is shaped by the visual art and the visual art is shaped by the music.

FFC is the first project launched by the new creative house Computer Ugly.

We were first interested to Seattle’s Nissim on Jake One’s White Van Music, then he was called D. Black ; and it was an unforgettable song off that album.  Although the message remains relatively the same; its nice to hear his sound progress.  Nissim and Yosef Brown are responsible for the production which incorporates a lot of different elements.

While many of today’s hip hop artists engage topics like sex, violence and wealth, Nissim (formerlyD.Black) has let his faith guide his music down a different path. First introduced to the world in 2008 with his song ”God Like,” he made waves in the industry with his 2009 album “All ‘Yah,” found himself with a video in MTV rotation, and shared the stage with some of hip hop’s biggest names at festivals like CMJ, SXSW and Capitol Hill Block Party. But even amidst his burgeoning commercial success, a feeling of emptiness compelled him to walk away from music, convert to Orthodox Judaism and delve deeply into the religious teachings of the Torah. Now, hes back, as Nissim and today, he has released the first single, “Unbelievable,” from his forthcoming mixtape, “Miracle Music,” which will drop May 15th for free and will be followed by the release of his new self titled album on July 16th.

With his up-tempo and jubilant song “Unbelievable,” which was produced by Nissim’s business partner, longtime friend, and brother-in-law, Yosef Brown, Nissim expresses themes of overcoming adversity, self-acceptance and celebration that represent the core of his new musical mission. “I wanted to push a very urgent fact, which is; although at times we all become overwhelmed or we may sometimes allow ourselves to fall into a time of self-loathing, or depression, G-d forbid!” Nissim remarks, “We still have to take time and see how far we’ve already come and learn to be happy with that which we’ve already accomplished.” As the first glimpse of material from his upcoming mixtape, “Unbelievable,” sets the stage for a triumphant return of an artist who has truly found his calling.

Coultrain released another free non-album single, “When 2 & 2 Make 1 (An Answer),” as part of the lead-up to his new LP, Jungle Mumbo Jumbo, releasing on Plug Research Records next Tuesday, April 23rd.

‘When 2 and 2 make 1( an answer)’ is a piece that Seymour calls from the depths of his being, it is ‘The answer’ he’s been searching for throughout his existence, as they say, everything is complicated because everything is so simple. This piece also serves as an allusion and a foreshadow of what occurred during his return from sabbatical. Thus his journey begins searching for the lady who will complete the equation.
