It’s Here – The Ecstatic

So we listened to the whole album. It’s dope and well worth the money, wasn’t expecting the blasts from Madlib [on"Auditorium"] and J Dilla past though. Was definitely surprised to hear “History” marking Black Star’s return on [official] wax. But the question remains— who did it better and being an avid Black Star fan, this is a tough call cause Skyzoo’s track been in rotation for 4 years:

Who is John Robinson??

January 29th, 2009 by

And why would MF DOOM produce his whole album?
john-robinson-who-is-this-man-us

That’s actually and easy question. Lil’ Sci is John Robinson – and John Robinson is he. It took me awhile to understand that because I’m slow. I know Lil’ Sci from the group Scienz of Life [<--Very dope,Ima Learnya!], and also from his various appearances on crazy tracks over the years, like the joint on Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1. Lil Sci is one of those dudes who always ends up popping up on a joint I like. In recent years he’s been doing triple duty not only as Lil Sci, but John Robinson the artist, as well as John Robinson the  President of Shaman Works. To bring you up to speed on that label, the roster consists of ILLities like Blackberry Jones, DJ K.O. and K Banger. In my mind, they get best label award in 05′ for releasing Emanon’s official official joint– The Waiting Room. But enough about his artists? What about his new album!!?

John Robinson – Outside Perspective [prod. MF DOOM]
This track has been floating around for years. It’s actually one of my favorite DOOM beats ever, period. Can’t get enough of it? Check our the Ghostface Remix blend  from homie DJ DUB on Heavy Metal Vol. 3

Ghostdeini The Effin’ Great

Ghostface Killah, one of the greatest to ever touch the mic got a new album dropping today.  Ghostdeini the Great is more of a compilation album with a few classic tracks, new remixes and some new and unreleased material.  It’s a must have for any Ghost fanati or collector.  The new track on the album is so cleverly titled “Ghostface Xmas”, just in time for the holidays as a perfect stocking stuffer.  Although, you Kwanzaa heads [ha] can give this gift on the Ujima/Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) [too easy lol] day and support a real MC…

Ghostface – Ghostface Xmas [prod. ?]

Check out the optimized track list below with all the info about each track and some downloads.  Who else is giving it to you like this? None but TheOvun, take heed bitches…

…Down with the group called Diggin’ In The Crates!

December 15th, 2008 by

DITC The movement
Greetings youngstas, could you ever imagine when there was a time when Fat Joe’s prop level was on high?  When he actually made real songs, and Miami wasn’t even in his vocabulary?  Yeah, believe it or not, he did and he was down with the Legendary D.I.T.C. [Diggin' In The Crates] crew:  a number of DJs, Producers and MCs are affiliated with the crew, but the core has always been, Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Showbiz and AG, OC, Big L [RIP], and Buckwild [who produced the best slow jam ever in life].

It’s nice to see them still doing their thing; I first got put on to them formally, back in 98′ when I first heard, the DJ Premiere produced, “Thick“, after that it was all over.  Since then they’ve released a number of albums but none of them captured their debut.  Their most recent release, The Movement, comes in at a close second in my favorites of their catalog, and by general Hip Hop standards it’s a masterpiece.

D.I.T.C. – Energy ft. O.C. and AG [prod. Showbiz]

With a few new faces, The Movement, sounds like good ole DITC material without sounding dated.   They have the perfect formula that works, bangin’ beats and dope rhymes.  And the one thing that remains consistent is dig quality of the beats.  Nowadays, any idiot can make a sped up chipmunk soul beat from the 70′s or 60′s; it take a real beatsmith to sample new fresh unfamiliar sounds and make you love them.  Furthermore, it takes a real beatsmith to take a song that you know and interpret it in a completely different way.  Show, Lord Finesse, Buckwild, E Blaze and Amed  bless the album along with a  new affiliate Drawzilla who has 3 tracks on the album.

Who’s Universally Controlling Minds?

Common – Universal Mind Control

It’s always a catch22 to see an artist emerge from the underground after 15+ years of steady grinding.  As a fan you want them to be able to grow and get the money and the accolades equivalent to the skills they possess. But like any artist, in any genre, once you hit it big, the sound is never the same.  Universal Mind Control is Common’s 8th Album. I wasn’t feeling the single very much, but just on loyalty alone, I had to cop it and add it to the other 7 [they would be lonely].  Perhaps the single, Universal Mind Control, was a message about the MAN?  Nah it’s just about dance music, “Stylin’…and Being Fly” [lol]

Common – Inhale [prod. Neptunes]

I’m going to drop some mathematics.  Universal Mind Control is 10 Tracks deep. Of the 10, 4 represent the quintessential Common sound and flow:  Announcement, Gladiator, Changes ft. Muhsinah and Inhale.  Of the remaining 6, you have 3 mandatory chick joints:  Punch Drunk Love ft. Kanye West, Make My Day ft. Ceelo and Sex 4 Suga [still trying to figure that one out].  And the last remaining 3, including the latest single are the New Age-Disco-Dance-Cocaine tracks:  Universal Mind Control, What A World ft. Chester French and Everywhere ft. Matina Topley Bird..
