Toronto’s Tona with NEW ALBUM

May 28th, 2009 by

Tona [aka Daetona as I knew him] has a new album coming out on June 2nd!!

Tona “Major” feat. Tenisha [Prod. Lyve]
DIR: David F. Mewa

Download: Tona “Major” feat. Tenisha [Prod. Lyve]
More Credits -
DP: Rinku Das Gupta
EDIT: Dan Racicot
VFX: Brendan O’Brien (Amino Group)
PROD: Write Just FIlms

So I am not sure if this is his official debut album because he has so much material. I started rockin with Tona [Daetona as he was known then] since around 03′ or 04′. Since then he’s had a heap of material and features, if you so lucky enough to get your hands on any of his tapes, KEEP THEM SAFE.** There are so many great talents repping real Hip Hop from Canada, I’m almost disgusted to see Jimmy Brooks get the most play here on the state side of  things.

Nevertheless, Tona’s latest Album DIRECT DEPOSIT is dropping on this Tuesday, JUNE 2nd in stores AND on iTunes. The album is produced entirely by fellow Toronto producer Lyve, whose production so far has been impeccable [Ayah, Press]. It also features a small mix of guests including, Skyzoo, Saukrates [Canada], and T.R.A.C.K.S. Check the tracklist and another vid featuring Ayah [that broad can sing].

Wio-K ft. Kyza Smirnoff and Seryus – Hide An Shoot

This track is a new release from Canadian MC Wio-K. You may remember him from such Kardinal tracks suck as Ol Time Killin; we first heard him around that and been keeping an eye on dude ever since. On “Hide N Shoot” he’s paired up with London MCs Kyza Smirnoff and Seryus–more on them later, for right now enjoy this track and what the world outside the US has to offer…real hip hop. So refreshing.

All About Nina

Kardinal Offishall – Nina
Chick in the white shirt is the same chick frm Sean Paul’s vid in the white hat, Tanisha Scott

Download: Kardinal Offishall – Nina [Prod. Supa Dups]

I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t one of my favorite joints off of Not 4 Sale. As we’ve said before, we’re gluttons over here for songs where women personify guns; oldest and best concept alive [ha]. I’m sure how it’s been doing sales wise, but who give a fuck, this is TheOvun, we don’t care bout no numbers we care about the music, so if you haven’t copped Not 4 Sale yet it’s your loss.

Kardinal Offishall – Neva Knew (Till i Kissed You) [from Fire and Glory 2005]
Prod. by ? piano credits to Kardinal

For those of you who think Kardinal made some kind of left turn with this track, let me inform you that every Kardinal album has atleast one Reggae/Rockers joint, here are the infamous previous joints—he should end it already and make a full reggae album—

The Sweatshop Union – Water Street

October 20th, 2008 by

Coming straight out of Vancouver Canada, I first heard about Sweatshop Union, through the group Swollen Members. As any underground head would know, the best way to find new artists is check the label mates, so Sweatshop Union happens to be signed to Battle Axe records, home and founded by Swollen Members…moving right along…I got put on way back in 04′ on their Natural Progression album and been checkin for them ever since.

The Sweatshop Union – Gutter ball

Water Street is 23 tracks of chill relaxed, insightful music. If you looking to chill out and listen to some insightful shit, this is the album for you. They’re politically aware and speak on the everything from the global economy to social anomie. Sweatshop Union is: Kyprios, Dirty Circus [Mos Eisley, Metty The Dert Merchant and DJ Itchy Ron] and Pigeon Hole[ Mr. Marmalade and Dusty Melodica] and between the 6 of them the production is ill.The sound draws from a little bit of everything, although  it’s Canadian it has that California layback sound.   Water Street is their 5th album.

The Streets – Everything Is Borrowed

The Streets- The Escapist [video]
*The was shot while dude actually decided to take a walk from England to France on some Forest Gump ish…

Mike Spinner aka The Streets has bended and twisted almost every musical genre over the course of his 4 albums and his latest is no different.

The Streets – The Escapist

Everything Is Borrowed was released in the UK September 15 and the physical version was released in the US just last week. I’m coming to you late with this entry, but for a good good reason; I’ve been bumping this record nonstop and now it’s in me. I’ll admit, I listen to production 1st, and lyrics 2nd [Hey I'm a child of Jazz Lovers], but this album is a masterful work with beautiful layers of live instrumentation [courtesy of The Streets and a host of others] mixed with insightful, thought provoking lyrics. So when you get down to it, what does the album sound like? Well, the only way I can explain it, is if Alanis Morrisette, Nina Simone and Cold Play had an orgy, and their love children got together with Janis Ian, Earth Wind and Fire, and Slick Rick then you’d have this album.
