Question: How Famous is Famous Now?

December 10th, 2008 by

Famous – Ain’t No Use [prod. The Narcotics]

Download: Famous – Ain’t No Use [prod. The Narcotics]

Let me bring you up to speed on this dude Famous, from Toronto. There was a now debunked rumor that he ghostwrote for Jay-Z. I still don’t know where to place this dude on the spectrum. With Canada you can always expect something from left field and slightly different and that’s exactly what you get from TheKidFamous. Most recently he’s released his debut EP, I Rap Now, available on Itunes and also for free download, hosted by Clinton Sparks.

I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t one of my favorite joints off of Not 4 Sale. As we’ve said before, we’re gluttons over here for songs where women personify guns; oldest and best concept alive [ha]. I’m sure how it’s been doing sales wise, but who give a fuck, this is TheOvun, we don’t care bout no numbers we care about the music, so if you haven’t copped Not 4 Sale yet it’s your loss.

Kardinal Offishall – Neva Knew (Till i Kissed You) [from Fire and Glory 2005]
Prod. by ? piano credits to Kardinal

For those of you who think Kardinal made some kind of left turn with this track, let me inform you that every Kardinal album has atleast one Reggae/Rockers joint, here are the infamous previous joints—he should end it already and make a full reggae album—

DJ..Bab, Bab, Bab, BABU!! Duck Season Vol. 3

October 28th, 2008 by

Say it ain’t so!   Following the underground classics, Duck Season Vol. 1 [2002] and Vol. 2 [2003] , DJ Babu is back with his final volume, Duck Season, Vol. 3.  The difference between this last one and his previous joints is the fact that Vol.3  is produced entirely by Babu himself.  It seems like he took 5 years to perfect his production craft [he did produce tracks for Dilated], to great results!  For those of you who don’t know, the previous Duck Season volumes showcased DJ Babu’s skills as a top tier turntablist and mixer and was produced by others.

So how does Babu do on the boards instead of the tables on an entire album?  Fuckin Great!

DJ Babu -Graveyardshiftin Feat. Cali Agents & Roc Marciano
I’ve always loved Cali Agents and no matter what nobody say to me, they are honorable Brooklyn residents, and LI native Roc Marciano did his thing too. Babu kept the beat simple but complex enough to be a great memorable stand alone track.

The album features guest appearances, from every damn body– Little Brother, Termanology, Bishop Lamont, Guilty Simpson, Percee P, Strong Arm Steady, of course Evidence and Rakaa, and the list goes on and on.  Each emcee brings his own flavor to the album. Production wise, Babu doesn’t stray from Soul and Boom Bap beats that communicate and blend nicely with his signature scratching.

Paper Planes: The Remixes…EXTRAVAGANZA!*updated

September 17th, 2008 by

So if you don’t know who M.I.A is  don’t worry about it.  If you haven’t ever heard Paper Planes before, you’re wrong, because you have in some capacity.

So, a little background on the song.  Paper Planes is third single off of M.I.A’s second album Kala which was released  over a year ago. To me, the track is certainly not new. Produced by Diplo, it was released as a single in February and since then it has been gaining notoriety to “non-M.I.A.” fans.  Which leaves us with the Paper Planes Remix MEGAPOST EXTRAVAGANZA!!

We’ve Collected around 20 different remixes to compile the the Top 10 list. Please note that blends [Red and Meth version, Lil Wayne and Jody Breeze Version] were not included, because this is about people doing the song based off of the beat alone.

1.    Bun B. and Rich Boy

This remix right here is one of the few, “official official” ones and all I can say is that they both did more than justice to the song.  It gets the number one spot, for both of their deliveries, the lyrics and the overall smoothness, I haven’t heard Bun B go in like this since the “Underground Kingz Album” and Rich Boy spit hard. What can I say, I have a bias for women personifying guns.

2.    Trey Songz

Trey Songz has the wonderful gift of taking popular songs and completely reinterpreting them. With Paper Planes it’s no exception, even the producer/s of the track think that it’s the best version out there.  That means something right?

3.    Esso

Get familiar with this dude, I have a feeling he’s that “next big thing”.  I’ve never heard him on a whack track.  He consistently gives a solid performance and never half asses in the booth.  His version gets the bronze for originality, flow and not just pasting his 16 bars on it. By the way he has a new mix tape out, The Gardens

Re-Educate Ya Self On…Kardinal Offishall

September 12th, 2008 by

This is another example of why the MAN keeps good music away from people.  First off, I am a Firestarter /Fire and Glory owner.  When I saw Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall had hooked up with Akon, I was like word? How is that gonna work?  Then I heard “Dangerous” and I was like word? So that’s how it worked!……

Just on a whim and a shred of hope I copped “Not 4 Sale” [Came out on the 9th], and I was surprised.  Way to pimp the system Kardi! He hasn’t sold out in the least; [I guess hence the title?]  And for those who are first time listeners–this dude has paid his dues!  He spits lyrical darts, and his production credits are nothing to mess with.  This here ladies and gentleman is TALENT.  Raw Talent.

I’m not going to post the whole album out of RESPEK, but please find the hottest track on the album below [Honorable Mentions: Set It Off ft. Clipse, Go Home w/ You ft. T-Pain, Do Me A Favour ft. Estelle]:

Kardinal Offishall–”Lighter”, Track 15

Kardinal Offishall–”Nina”, Track 9
