DJ..Bab, Bab, Bab, BABU!! Duck Season Vol. 3

October 28th, 2008 by

Say it ain’t so!   Following the underground classics, Duck Season Vol. 1 [2002] and Vol. 2 [2003] , DJ Babu is back with his final volume, Duck Season, Vol. 3.  The difference between this last one and his previous joints is the fact that Vol.3  is produced entirely by Babu himself.  It seems like he took 5 years to perfect his production craft [he did produce tracks for Dilated], to great results!  For those of you who don’t know, the previous Duck Season volumes showcased DJ Babu’s skills as a top tier turntablist and mixer and was produced by others.

So how does Babu do on the boards instead of the tables on an entire album?  Fuckin Great!

DJ Babu -Graveyardshiftin Feat. Cali Agents & Roc Marciano
I’ve always loved Cali Agents and no matter what nobody say to me, they are honorable Brooklyn residents, and LI native Roc Marciano did his thing too. Babu kept the beat simple but complex enough to be a great memorable stand alone track.

The album features guest appearances, from every damn body– Little Brother, Termanology, Bishop Lamont, Guilty Simpson, Percee P, Strong Arm Steady, of course Evidence and Rakaa, and the list goes on and on.  Each emcee brings his own flavor to the album. Production wise, Babu doesn’t stray from Soul and Boom Bap beats that communicate and blend nicely with his signature scratching.

It’s Tuesday Oct. 7th, Do You Know Where Your Hip Hop is?

October 7th, 2008 by

So it’s a Tuesday, in the midst of what is a most interesting 4th quarter in the music game. While major labels are crossing their fingers on their cash cow artists, the Indie/Underground scene as always, prepares for their releases very nonchalantly on the knowledge that they don’t have to rush and cash in on first week or even first month sales. All of us underground heads know that the shelf life of a remarkable Underground classic is measured in MONTHS, YEARS and tours. With that being said, I look forward to seeing all these cats in the months ahead on the road.

Like always, here are today’s dopest, funk doobiest, indie/alternative releases, with more in depth coverage on artists we haven’t featured, Enjoy!

Jake One – White Van Music
Check our earlier post with some of the tracks featured for download!

Sway DaSafo – The Signature LP
Of course no American media is covering this release, but but trust me on this, the MAN does not want you to hear this album because it’s sick…but of course we covered it…

MF DOOM – Operation Doomsday [Re-Issue]
I am one of the chosen few who actually brought this album when it came out. [99' or 00' i think] Do I have an original? I don’t know. What I DO know is that ever since I seen that they were goin for $50.00 – $100 dollars on Amazon, I burned myself a copy and have never played the original disc since.
MF DOOM – Dead Bent

Finally after 800 years of rumors about the re-issue [since the 2001 edition], it is finally upon us. When I introduce MF DOOM to anyone who has never heard him I give them this album and Madvillain and I wind up converting them all, Muahahaha! ALL CAPs bitches.

“White Van Music” is Dope

September 18th, 2008 by

Producer Jake One is finally coming out with a solo album on October 7th, and i can’t wait.  I was introduced to this dude’s soulful production on Planet Asia’s track Charcoal. His productions are soul sample heavy with a little bit of classic jazz.  I’ve always liked his sound.  Recently he’s been known for his work with G-Unit.  On this album, he has a beast line- up from Busta Rhymes to Young Buck, Freeway and MF Doom.

“The Truth” ft. Freeway and Brother Ali
This track is perfect.

“Trap Door” ft. MF DOOM
I have bias for DOOM and this brought the best out of homie.

Tracklist and more production from Jake One after the jump.
