It’s Here – The Ecstatic

So we listened to the whole album. It’s dope and well worth the money, wasn’t expecting the blasts from Madlib [on"Auditorium"] and J Dilla past though. Was definitely surprised to hear “History” marking Black Star’s return on [official] wax. But the question remains— who did it better and being an avid Black Star fan, this is a tough call cause Skyzoo’s track been in rotation for 4 years:

Mos Def and Philly brand UNDRCRWN have been linking up for a little while now.  The duo released a limited edition tee shirt for Mos Def’s performance at Carnegie Hall last summer.  Now fast forward about 8 months and the brand and musician are sitting pretty.  UNDRCRWN has become a major player in the street fashion with witty designs, referencing legendary sport figures and big homie Mos Def is looking to drop his HIGHLY anticipated album within the coming months.  But I guess selling tee shirts at every major online shop and having even your baby momma blog about your upcoming album isn’t enough.

The two decided to hit the spring season hard, bouncing back (you like that huh) with Mos Def’s own collection with UNDRCRWN, currently featuring tee shirts, but with jackets and sweatshirts to drop soon.  The collection contains graphic tees and focuses entirely around the pan-African flag colors.  You can peep and purchase the collection at UNDRCRWN’s online shop.

Mos Def’s The Ecstatic Album cover…Fake?

I swear ya’ll–it ain’t easy being a kid genius….BOOM SHOTS!! More FIYAH!

So Black Dante’s The Ecstatic is dropping June 9th [we told ya'll that February date was wackness], the same day he dropped Black On Both Sides, waay back in 1999.  The cover is plain to say the least– a striking image it is–but something kept telling us that we’ve seen it before.  And not in a, “i saw this in an article for the FADER” kind of way.

Ladies and gentle man, this image is from the 1977 film Killer of Sheep directed by Charles Burnett.  [BLUCKA BLOW!]  The graphic designer slept on this job cause all they did was use a red filter over the image–lazy bastards.  But for those who want to know.  The film is basically about living life in the Watts section of LA; trials and tribulations; day in the life of black man kinda of movie, [I'm thinking Baldwin's Native Son-esque].  Anyway, IF this is the real cover, it should be interesting if there is any correlation between the movie and the album….HMMMMM….  Here’s some more info on the flick.

In a way, we’d like to think TheOvun is a “Killer of Sheep” as well….  And for all of ya’ll who may have missed it, check out Mos Def’s REMIX to BROOKLN (GO HARD) ft. Santogold.  Way to show up Jay-Z’s whack imitation of patois…..

Mos Def ft. Fela Kuti – Quiet Dog

The man responsible for the birth of this site has got another track floating on these INTERNET streets, most would say it is entitled “Quiet Dog”, but to the trained ear and after some investigation, I’m going to go ahead and say it’s called Quiet Dog [Bite Hard]. This joint is produced by Preservation. I don’t know much about them–very mysterious–but he/she/they are the same ones who gave the us the ever so soulful and funky Napoleon Dynamite track. “Quiet Dog’s” samba influenced beat is a refreshing and marks a happy medium between hardcore Black On Both Sides fans and The New Danger / Tru3 Magic Fans.

Mos Def – Quiet Dog [Bite Hard] [prod. Preservation]

Word on street is the album, The Ecstatic, is dropping February24th, but I’ll believe it when I see an official press release.

“Quiet Dog” starts off with an audio intro from the one and only Fela Kuti. It’s nice to see that Mos is coming at us with a new sound but has not forgotten where he started or who he admired.
